Risk Management & Mains Replacement • Scenarios can be run to determine pipeline lengths for replacement • Prioritisation is based on a company’s unique strategy • Prioritising by risk score alone will reduce explosion incidents effectively. • Prioritising by condition score alone will reduce leakage repairs effectively. • The process is flexible enough to allow prioritisation to be performed on risk or condition or a combination of the two. • In addition, the utility can input limits on each years’ replacement programme, either by cost or length.

Risk Management & Mains Replacement • In the UK, GL (Advantica) have provided Mains Replacement models to National Grid since the 1980’s. • Current methodology was endorsed by the UK Government safety agency, Health and Safety Executive, in 1999, and adopted by National Grid in 2000. • GL is currently assisting National Grid in identifying mains for replacement as part of their national 30 year programme to replace all cast iron and ductile iron mains within 30 metres of property in the next 30 years, directing a replacement programme costing approximately £15 billion (17.5 billion euros).

Harmonised European Gas Quality- Phase 1 - Appliance Testing Programme • European Commission Mandate 400 to CEN for “Standardisation in the Field of Gas Qualities” • CEN Mandate: “…For the combustion parameters a testing programme on safety, efficiency and environmental impact is needed in order to define the standards…” • Only GAD-compliant appliances are included (Directive 90/396/EEC) • Only domestic appliances to be tested • All European countries using gas in H Group (defined in EN 437)

Harmonised European Gas Quality- Phase 1 - Appliance Testing Programme • The total number of gas customers (domestic, commercial and industrial) in the EU25 was 102 million in 2005 (source: Eurogas) • There are some 150 Million or more gas appliances installed in the EU25. • The GASQUAL project will bring an answer to the impact of various scenarios of gas quality changes on safety, efficiency and emissions of those appliances covered by the GAD directive. • For non-GAD appliances the study will enable the assessment of the potential risk on the basis of a theoretical approach and we will make some recommendations on how to investigate those appliances further.
