All these factors are related. In this scenario, inventory management becomes extremely important. Barcodes are the most common and useful way of knowing exactly what item has been sold in what quantity. They enable businesses to plan stocks and other procurement-related aspects. While most of us know that they look like bars and stripes, there are actually many types of product barcodes out there. Barcodes are usually either one-dimensional or two-dimensional. There are thirteen major types of one-dimensional barcodes, and two major types of two-dimensional barcodes. One-dimensional barcodes work by varying the spacing between vertical lines, and varying their widths. It is a linear function. The most common type of one-dimensional barcode is the UPC barcode. This barcode is used at point-of-sale in a consumer goods business. The code is scanned by a handheld laser, and the information gets fed into the systems. Consumer goods are associated with a lot less information as compared to industries like overseas logistics. These companies use the Code 128 one- dimensional barcode, which is complex and can hold much more information. The most popular two-dimensional barcode is the QR code. It is a versatile coding system which can be used to read numbers, alphanumeric characters, binary/bytes and Kanji. This code is the most used in Japan. Industries of retail, entertainment and advertising make the most extensive use of this type of barcode. Another type of two-dimensional barcode is the Datamatrix. It is used for extremely small items. There are many other types of barcodes in existence, but those mentioned above are the most popular.
