The 3 Types of Compressed Air Dryers to Choose From

There are three main types of compressed air dryers: refrigeration, membrane and dessicant. Each of these compressors have their own advantages and intended applications. However, when it comes to sizing a compressor, the criteria remain the same. Consider the installation location, the ambient condition, inflow rate, inlet pressure and the pressure dew point. Find out more from these slides.

  1. Choosing the Right Compressed Air Dryer

  2. There are three types of compressed air drying technology. Let's look at the three types; the first one is refrigeration, the second one is membrane, the third one is desiccant. Now, with refrigeration drying technology, we are utilising differential temperature to extract the moisture. With membrane, we are utilising the wall of the membrane, and the speed of the gas, to separate the gas so that we actually have a desired dew point afterward. Third one is desiccant. Desiccant utilises a sieve material and it actually absorbs the moisture within the sieve and then allows compressed air to pass downstream. The refrigeration dryer typically, cycling between 3 to 5 degrees pressure dew point, membranes is between minus 20 to about 10. However, it is a suppression technology, so it actually works on a sliding scale. With desiccant typically designed for minus 25 to minus 40 and minus 70 and beyond, and typically you can actually select it to cater for what you need. When sizing a dryer there are a number of very important criteria that we need to know: the installation location, which means that, we need to know the installation ambient condition such as the ambient temperature; the inlet flow rate to the dryer; inlet pressure; and the required pressure dew point of the application.
