  1. Federation By Samuel Alsop

  2. Why Did Australia Become a Nation? • It was the First of January 1901. Many were celebrating in the streets. Why? Federation of course! Australia had just become the commonwealth of Australia, and not just an English Colony. But unlike current day America we are a constitutional monarchy which means we can have a government and a constitution (Funny that) but the queen is still in charge.

  3. How did Australia change during this time? (1890-1915) This time was a very optimistic time for Australia, also reflected in the housing in this time known as ‘Federation Architecture’ that were not English, not American but a bit of both, they often also had a rising sun to Reflect optimism. Another new exciting thing was democracy, The Shearers’ Union was formed in 1890 with tens of thousands of members (How could so many people be excited about politics?) mainly trying to get better conditions for badly paid shearers. Eventually turned to the Australian Labour Party which, in case you have not noticed, still stands today. An Identity of Australia and not just an English colony is formed, with the help of home grown writers such as Lawson and Patterson. An Australian icon is made, the swagman. It was thought that anyone who can survive in the outback is strong stuff- stronger than the English.

  4. Who were the people that came to our country? • Many people came to Australia during federation times (sometimes also know as the golden time or the golden era) from many different countries, but, (especially before federation) not all were loved, Chinese and Indiginous cultures were often hated and disliked in pure racism, something today very illegal. • Back then was the main time when people came from other country's to make up the multicultural society we live in today, in fact, more than a quarter of Australian residents were born over seas and one fifth of the rest have at least one over-seas born parent. The leading countries are from tenth to first, Germany (my grandparents) Malaysia, South Africa, Philippines, Vietnam, Italy, India, China (excluding Taiwanese), New-Zealand and our mother nation, the UK*. *Info from 2012

  5. Louisa Lawson • Louisa Lawson (Mother of Henry Lawson) was a brilliant writer who lived in Sydney for most of her life and published a magazine called ‘The Dawn’, A magazine for women about thing such as woman's rights, federation and much more. Lawson was very strict about only female employees for her magazine (Many male publishers did not like this at all) which lasted 17 years, she was on the side of federation and women's rights. She was a fighter and a good one of them and a key player in women's rights and federation. You can find her face on many stamps.
