  1. Welcome to Westlake High School! Class of 2016!

  2. What does a typical 9th grade schedule look like?... • Must take 6* classes! • Can start at 8:00a.m. or 7:00a.m. • Sample schedule: • Unscheduled period 1 • English 9 • Health • Biology • P.E. • Elective • Algebra or Geometry *If you plan to take band/chorus in addition to aworld language, consider taking health in summer school, otherwise you will enroll in a 7 period day.

  3. Academic Petitions • If already in HONORS: Can remain in honors as long as student earns B- or better at the last marking period. • If in college prep science and wish to try Biology honors: Must score a 475 on the STAR test and have two A’s in the 8th grade. • If in college prep English and wish to try English 9 Honors: Must score a 475 on the STAR test and have two A’s in the 8thgrade. • If in Algebra 1 CP but wish to try Geometry Honors: Must score a 475 on the STAR test and earn three A’s in the 8th grade. Students not meeting these requirements may go through the formal petition process: • Pick up petition from your middle school counseling office. • Fill it out. • Attach a transcript. • Attach a teacher recommendation form. • Submit a writing sample of an in-class essay with teacher comments for English petitions. • Submit completed petition to your middle school counseling office by May 1. All 9th grade students in Honors must maintain a B- at ALL grading periods, or you may be moved to CP.

  4. High School Graduation Requirements Classes are worth 5 credits per semester. You must earn a D or better to receive high school credits for a class. You must earn a C or better for 4-year university admissions.

  5. There are two basic sets of requirements: High School Graduation Requirements • Any level of the course will count: Standard, Resource, Basic, CP, H, AP • Must meet only the minimum requirements • Earn credits with D- or better 4-Year University Requirements, a.k.a. “A-G” • Must take CP level or higher • Must often take courses above and beyond minimum requirements • Must earn a C or better (must earn a B or better for selective colleges)

  6. Social Science Requirement(Starts in Grade 10!) High School Graduation Any level of: • World History or AP European History • US History • U.S. Government & Politics • Economics A-G Requirement: Must pass with “C” or better • World History CP or AP European History • US History CP or AP • U.S. Government & Politics CP or AP • Economics CP or H Well qualified students may petition to enroll in AP Human Geography as an elective in grade 9, space permitting.

  7. Visual & Performing Arts and World Language Requirements (will fill in under “elective” later…) A-G Reqt: Must pass with “C” or better. 1 year of Visual & Performing Art AND 2 years of the same world language (3 years recommended) High School Graduation 1 year of Visual & Performing Art OR 1 year of a World Language

  8. ENGLISH REQUIREMENT High School Graduation • Four years of English A-G Reqt: Four years of college prep (CP) level or higher. Must pass with grade of “C” or better.

  9. MATH REQUIREMENT High School Graduation Must complete total of 30 credits on the high school site, including Algebra 1 A-G Reqt: Three years of CP level or higher. Must pass with a grade of “C” or better. REQUIRED • Algebra 1 CP / H • Geometry CP / H • Algebra 2 CP / H RECOMMENDED Above and beyond Algebra 2 (Math Analysis, Calculus etc.)

  10. Science Requirement High School Graduation • Biological Science (1 yr) • Physical Science (1 yr) A-G Reqt: Two years of laboratory science. Must pass with “C” or better. 2 Years Required • Biology CP / H • Chemistry CP / H 3rdYear Recommended • Advanced Anatomy H (Teacher approval required) • AP Biology • AP Chemistry • AP Environmental Science • Marine Science CP • Physics CP/AP • Physiology/Anatomy CP/H • Forensic Science CP

  11. Physical Education RequirementNote: P.E. is not required for college admissions • 2 Years: • Can be earned from P.E., a WHS team sport, marching band or colorguard. • If you are interested in trying out for a team sport, marching band or colorguard, go to your middle school counseling office and fill out a Future Warrior Packet

  12. 1 semester of health Other half of the year will be filled with your choice of Careers/Auto Safety or Microsoft Office. Health is offered during summer school so that students may replace it with a full year elective, if desired. Auto Safety is not offered to students who take Health over the summer. See the CVUSD website for information on taking Health in summer school. Health RequirementNote: Health is not required for college admissions

  13. Elective Requirement High School Graduation Every class taken above and beyond the previously listed graduation requirements will count towards the 75 credit elective requirement A-G Reqt: Must pass with “C” or better. 1 full year of a CP/H/AP level elective is required (above and beyond previously mentioned requirements)

Elective Instructions… • Please fill in your registration form: • Choose one primary elective • List two alternate electives • Elective options are on back of registration sheet • Class descriptions are available online in the H.S. Course Directory: www.conejo.k12.ca.us/whs • If you plan to take Health over the summer, please list an alternate class choice on the registration form
