Even during a smaller remodeling project, your home can quickly become unsafe with little ones around, and if you have no choice but to live onsite as the work is carried out, you must find ways to protect them at all times. Here are 7 simple ways to help keep your kids safe while your home is remodelled: 1.Explain things to them The first step, before work even begins, is to sit your little ones down and explain to them about the work that is likely to be carried out in and around the home. Make it clear if there are any areas or spaces that they shouldn’t enter during this period, and tell them in no uncertain terms, that they are not allowed to touch any tools that they might find lying around.
2. Create a safe zone It’s important that your kids have safe spaces they can go to, where they can play without fear, and not disturb any of the work that’s ongoing. Talk to your contractor and between you both, make a clear distinction between the temporary living spaces and the remodeling spaces. 3. Reassign certain spaces If work is going on in the kitchen, for example, you’ll need to shift some of the more commonly used items to another room where they can be accessed safely by you, and your kids, such as a hallway or even the garage.
4. Don’t leave tools lying around Ideally, your contractors will be willing to unplug and pack away their tools at the end of each day, but if they don’t, you should try to do this wherever possible to make sure little hands don’t find them. 5. Block off electrical outlets Switches and outlets with safety covers are a common feature in most households with young children, but in areas in which power is continually needed, such as for power tools during remodeling, sliding plate covers might be worth investing in.
6. Keep the floors tidy While this can help to keep you sane during a remodeling project by making the place look less of a mess, it can also prevent your children from tripping over items, or picking up shards of glass, splinters of wood etc, that may have fallen onto the floor during the work.
7. Be mindful of the air Dust and debris are often kicked up during a remodeling project, and if you’ve got small children with allergies and asthma, this can aggravate their symptoms and make life very uncomfortable for them while work is ongoing. Be sure to ventilate the spaces being worked on whenever you can, and cover your furniture and entryways with dust sheets or plastic liners, to limit the transfer of dust and other debris. Remodeling projects are always easier if kids aren’t on the scene, but all too often, their presence is unavoidable. In these instances, the best you can do is keep them safe following the tips above, and ensure that they’re not causing any hazards to the contractors!
