Market, Limit, and Stop Orders on Coinbase Pro • Coinbase Pro is an advanced counterpart to the regular Coinbase exchange. Anyone with a Coinbase account can open a Coinbase Pro account by visiting their website or downloading their app. Coinbase Pro has lower fees and multiple types of orders, one of the main differentiators between the two platforms. • For an in-depth comparison of Coinbase, Coinbase Pro, and other exchanges, check out our Bitcoin Exchange Comparison. • This article covers the three types of orders on Coinbase Pro: • Market Orders • Limit Orders • Stop Orders • Each has different fees and use cases. You can buy or sell your given asset of choice with these three kinds of orders. New orders can be placed on the bottom left corner of your Coinbase Pro interface.
Market Orders • Let’s start with the simplest type of order: market orders. Market orders allow you to buy or sell immediately at or around the current price. Market orders can work well for markets with a lot of activity, and are useful if you’re trying to enter a position immediately. • However, market orders can cause slippage, resulting in a higher or lower buy/sell price than intended. You have less control over the price you get filled at, as the exchange will execute your order immediately regardless of the price. • Slippage: the difference between the expected price and execution price of an order • This can be more detrimental in times of high volatility, as the price may move significantly in the time that it takes for your order to be filled. Slippage is also common in less active markets with less volume, as large orders can move the price. • Market orders on Coinbase Pro have fees of 0.5% • To execute a market order, simply enter your purchase/sale amount into the field, verify that you’re okay with the fees and amount you’re getting, and press the button to place your order.
