  3. Matthew 1:1-17 • A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham: • Abraham was the father of Isaac,Isaac the father of Jacob,Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, • Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,Perez the father of Hezron,Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, • Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of King David.

  4. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife, • Solomon the father of Rehoboam,Rehoboam the father of Abijah,Abijah the father of Asa, • Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,Jehoram the father of Uzziah, • Uzziah the father of Jotham,Jotham the father of Ahaz,Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, • Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,Manasseh the father of Amon,Amon the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

  5. After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, • Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, • Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud, • Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

  6. What’s in Jesus family tree? • The whole story of the Old Testament • From Haran…..via Israel and Babylon • Around 1800 years! • Who is Jesus? • Legitimacy – line unbroken • Identity – Son of Abraham, Son of David • Significance – the whole of the Gospel

  7. Fulfilment of God’s promises • Three sets of 14 generations • Abraham to David • David to the Exiles • The Exiles to Jesus • Descended from Abraham • “I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” (Genesis 22:18) • By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. (Hebrews 11:8)

  8. Descended from David • “But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever. ” (1 Samuel 7:15-16) • The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” (Psalm 110:1)

  9. Descended from the Exiles • “Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight;I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out,or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope.” (Isaiah 42:1-4)

  10. And who are these women? • Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar…. • Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab…. • Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth…. • David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife….

  11. God will forgive sinners? • God wants to save all nations…. • ….for God all people are equal • “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:28-29) • God honours those who take risks in faith • God honours those who are powerless, marginalised, neglected, abused

  12. So who is Jesus? • Jesus is of humankind and God himself • “who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God” (Romans 1:3-4) • “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) • Jesus is the fulfilment of all God’s promises • Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, God with us, who will save his people from their sins!
