  1. FAMILY TREE Jay is the head of the Delgado-Pritchett family as well as the entire family tree, being the father of Claire and Mitch, as well as husband to Gloria. When marrying Gloria, Jay gained Manny as his stepson.

GROUPS • Marvin Shaw’s definition for groups is “persons who are interacting with one another in such a manner that each person influences and is influenced by each other person.” • As you saw in the family tree, Modern Family consists of 11 persons. Groups generally consist of 3-15 people, making Modern Family a perfect example of a group.

  3. “THE FAMILY IS OUR FIRST GROUP” • “For most of us, the family is our first group, where we learn communication patterns, functional and dysfunctional, that can last generations and affect all aspects of our lives.” • Small groups, such as families • Basic building blocks of our society • Models of the interactive process operating in society as a whole • Formation is natural • We use groups to • Belong and identify with each other • Find love and esteem • Exercise power over others and our environment • A primary group exists to satisfy these needs, and the characters of Modern Family exemplifies a primary group

GROUPS ARE BETTER PROBLEM SOLVERS • Groups are better problem solvers, in the long run, than solitary individuals because • Access to more information than individuals do • If Claire and Gloria would have talked to each other, Haley would not have been able to get away with her party • Can spot flaws and biases in each other’s thinking • Cam’s dad gave Mitch the smaller watch and Jay thought it was because he thought Mitch to be more feminine. Cam’s dad said it was because Mitch had a smaller wrist.

VERBAL AND NONVERBAL • Verbal and nonverbal communication between group members is where the work is accomplished • Luke received mixed messages from Claire when she smiled while saying Walt had passed away • Grouphate • Negative attitudes that get in the way of effective participation • Often have mixed feelings about being in groups • Alex doesn’t want to spend the day with Phil • Cam and Mitch’s dads don’t like each other • Claire tries to change Luke’s reaction to Walt’s death

Social Loafers- Only watch and contribute little to the group • Participant Observers- Actively participate and critically reflect the group • Haley behaved unethically by lying about the party • Manny controlled the party & kept the house clean • Using the four situations that occurred in this episode (Jay/Cam’s Dad, Claire/Luke, Phil/Alex, and Haley/Manny/Gloria), I hope you all have a clearer understanding of the information presented in Chapter One. • Now Rachel will talk about Chapter Two: Communication.

  9. CHAPTER FOUR: DIVERSITY AND THE EFFECTS OF CULTURE • In the Episode, “Election Day,” Claire is running for councilwoman and enlists the whole family to help. The Dunphy children answer phones and call voters to persuade them to vote for Claire. • Mitch and Cam buy a car from Craigslist that they cover in “Vote for Claire” posters. They drive around trying to campaign for Claire at first, until they realize with their megaphone everyone listens to them, so they decide to yell at people on the streets and eventually criticize businesses.

HERE IS A VIDEO SHOWING CAM AND MITCH’S CAMPAIGN • Meanwhile, Haley has been rejected from 4 colleges and has been waitlisted by 1. • Gloria also recruits people, but being brought up in Columbia, she doesn’t understand the election process or why she is trying to get people to vote for Claire. • Now Ben is going to talk with you more about this episode, and how it correlates with Chapter Four.
