AIMS OF THIS PRESENTATION • Summarise the aims, development and present status of the FIA Institute Medical Programme, which was established to develop and advance the skills of medical personnel in motor sport • Explain the necessity for a systematic and multidisciplinary approach to injury control and research in motor sport

  3. Institute Medical Programme • Provide education through documentary material and seminars • Develop criteria for quality assessment • Undertake multidisciplinary research to enhance medical practice in motor sport • Secure funding through the FIA Foundation Motor Sport Development Fund • Establish the FIA Institute Medical Advisory Panel

  4. Motor sports injury: towards a multi-disciplinary approach • Motor sport safety is a multidisciplinary issue • Global road safety advances supported by the FIA Foundation are now driven by a systems approach • In the wider world of science, biomedical engineering already requires the collaboration of engineers and clinical scientists • The research and educational activities supervised by the new Medical Advisory Panel can work with and enhance the existing engineering-oriented research of the FIA Institute
