  2. User account • As student you are entitled to use the computing resources available at the university. • The username and password you received is your key to these resources.

  3. Using computers on campus. • All campus computers require a UiO username and password. • Always log off when leaving a computer. • You may restart/reset a computer at any time if necessary. • Do not turn computers off. This is because we update computers at night. • Computers go into a “locked” mode if left without logging off. • Locked computers can be reset by either turning it off and on. • Hold the reset button for 6 seconds to turn off. • Do not install programs on the computers.

  4. Active user account: • If not specifically told otherwise, you must keep your account active by ensuring that you • Pay your semester registration fees each semester. • Register for exams/courses each semester. • If you skip registering or paying one semester your account may become inactive shortly after the next semester.

  5. The username gives access to: • Your university email account with up to 100MB storage of mail. • About 100 MB of personal disk space on a network disk (M:) • Access to many computers on campus. • Access to high speed network. • Access to wireless network for hom computers • University databases (such as medline.). • Printers. • Programs.

  6. Your user account is personal • Do not give away your password to others. You are responsible for any misuse of your account. • If an account is seriously misused access privileges to the university account may be taken away. • Remember to log off when leaving a computer • Others may misuse your account, by for example using up your printer quota.

  7. Changing your password. • You have all received a username and password. • For security reasons the University ask that you to change your password. • The password may be changed by going to the web page http://password.uio.no

  8. Changing your password • It takes ½ to 4 hours before the new password is activated on all systems. • Wait until the new password is active before logging on to a campus computer again • A good time to change your password is just before you leave the computer for the day. • This will give the system all night to update the password on all systems.

  9. What to use as a password. • To ensure that the password is secure. Only passwords that have at combination of letters digits and special characters (e.g. -,.:;&%) will be accepted. • Simple password with just letters will be rejected when you attempt to change the password. • The digits and special characters. must be in the middle of the password. • The password is changed through a web page inn internet explorer.

  10. Email. • The standard email program for e-mail is http://webmail.uio.no. • You can access to this email from all over the world. • Use your university username and password to check your mail in web-mail. • Keep up-to-date by reading your university email.

  11. Disk space: • All the campus computers will automatically connect your personal network disk to M: when you log on. • We advise to only save on the M: disk (not on the Hard Disk (C:) or (D:) ). • Documents saved on the C disk cannot be accessed on other computers. • Documents saved on the M: disk can be accessed through any computer on campus. • A backup of all documents on your M: disk is taken every night. • You can alternatively save on “USB memory keys”. • To avoid accidental loss of data we still advise you to keep extra copies (e.g. on the M: disk.)

  12. The Network: • All campus computers have access to the university’s high speed network. • For security reasons it is not allowed to connect private computers on the University cabeled network . • IT is possible to connect private computers to the network through some campus resident flats, or through telphone line to UiO modems (22596790). • See http://www.usit.uio.no/it/hjemmekontor/english/index.html • It is possible to access personal disk and other resources from outside of the UIO network. • Some places on Campus offer wireless connections for privet computers. • Se http://www.usit.uio.no/it/wlan/peapforxp/

  13. Databases: • The university library offer access to a wide number of databases that can be accessed through the Web. • Many databases are restricted to university employees and students. • These databases can be accessed from all campus computers. • From private computers on external networks, databases can be accessed through a VPN connection • See http://www.usit.uio.no/it/hjemmekontor/english/vpn.html • Databases can be found in x-port see http://x-port.uio.no

  14. Printers: • Computers in computer labs are automatically connect to ut_isam12.

  15. Student printer quotas • An account of all pages printed is kept for each user • Printer resource are disabled for students who not to pay the optional “Copy fee” • Upon paying semester and copy fee students receive an initial quota of 250 pages. • Students can print so long as the quota is over zero. • Students can pay for more pages through the StudentWeb • See http://www.uio.no/english/academics/registration/ • The charge is kr 0,40 per one sided page.
