  2. Sydney Sydney is the most popular city in Australia. It is on Australia's south-east coast of the Tasman Sea. The city is built on hills surrounding Port Jackson which is known as Sydney Harbour, where the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge are. The surroundings of the metropolitan area is enclosed by national parks, and many bays, rivers, beaches including the famous Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. Inside the city,thereare many notable parks, including Hyde Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Sydney has a high position in various world cities rankings. Many major international sporting events, including the 1938 British Empire Games and the 2000 Summer Olympicstook place in Sydney. Melbourne Melbourne is the capital and most popular city in the state of Victoria, and the second-most popular city in Australia.The city is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city centre placed on the estuary of the Yarra River. Melbourne was founded in 1835 by settlers from Launceston in Van Diemen's Land.
