  2. Hans Baldung"Grien" (1484 körül – 1545) német reneszánsz festő, fametsző. Albrecht Dürer legtehetségesebb tanítványának tartották. Legtöbb fametszete könyvekhez készült. Becenevét "Grien" Nürnbergbe kerülésekor vette fel melyet később monogramjában is szerepelt "Grienhans" formában,mely németül boszorkányt jelent. Baldung freiburgi tartózkodása idején, 1516 körül készült a Budapesti Szépművészeti Múzeumban látható Fájdalmas Szűzanya, melyen a Szűzanya szívét átdöfő kardot az utóbbi időkben történt retaurálásig átfestés takarta el. Az ikonográfiai hagyomány alapján arra következtethetünk, hogy hozzá tartozott egy Vir Dolorum-ábrázolás, mely azonban nem maradt fenn. Feltételezhető viszont, hogy összefügg és eredetileg egy oltárművet alkotott a berlini Krisztus siratásával és egy Szent Verenát ábrázoló táblával (Münster, Landesmuseum). A Mater Dolorosa mintaképe Baldung számára Dürer 1496-97-ben készült képe (München, Bayerische Staatsgemaldesammlungen) volt, drámai kifejezése viszont Grünewald hatásáról tanúskodik.
