  3. Standards Management and Use • KIS: Keep It Simple • Hire Smart People • Communicate • Repeat

  4. Hire Smart People “If you’re dumb, hire smart people… If you’re smart, hire smart people that disagree with you.” - Isaac Jaffe, Sports Night

  5. Standards Management • Some tools and thoughts within MicroStation to help you on your way

  6. DGNLibs • Been around since the beginning for V8 (6 years!) • Holds levels, symbology, Text Styles, Dimension Styles, etc • Use’em. • Go to Session “x” to learn about them • Not going to bore you here with this one

  7. Dimension Audit • Oldie but a goodie • Checks for Overridden Text Lost Associations Non-Associated Dropped Dims

  8. Cell Index • Do you use CELLUTIL to document your cells? • It’s built in XM!

  9. Cell Index Settings Based on text size Pretty self explanatory Anyone still use these?

  10. Cell Index

  11. Element Templates • “Parameters” or “The Recipe” • Can set symbology, settings, hatching, etc • Can be connected to Tools • Can be set up as a “tree”

  12. Element Templates • Can be connected to Tools

  13. Element Templates • Can be connected to Tasks

  14. Element Templates • See Sessions for details • But here’s a couple of ideas:

  15. Element Templates • Import Settings Manager file

  16. Element Templates • Import Settings Manager file

  17. Element Templates • BarMenu to Templates • Free tool at MicroStation.Bentley.com

  18. Element Templates • BarMenu to Templates

  19. Element Templates

  20. Standards Checker • Additions: Element Templates

  21. Standards Checker • Oldies but Goodies: SC Ref Checks

  22. Standards Checker • Oldies but Goodies: SC Ref Checks

  23. XML report file w/ SCREF VBA loaded You need the style sheet (.XSL), and you can edit

  24. XML report file w/ SCREF VBA loaded You need the style sheet (.XSL), and you can edit to suit your need

  25. Workspace Management Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Alphonse Karr (1808-1890)

  26. Standards Management and Use • KIS: Keep It Simple Simple is easy to maintain Easy to faster to change The more complicated you make your workspace, the harder it will be for others to troubleshoot

  27. My opinion: Don’t do this…

  28. Checking for the network Server=//SERVERNAME/CADDRESOURCESHARE %if exists ($(SERVER)) COMPANYNAME_NETWORK = 1 %else %undef COMPANYNAME_NETWORK SERVER = C:/CADDRESOURCESHARE/ %endif %if exists($(SERVER)$(MSTNVER)/workspace/standards/SITE.cfg) %include $(SERVER)$(MSTNVER)/workspace/standards/SITE.cfg %endif

  29. DWG variables • To use when you want to use DWG mode, but get specific on what the client wants • Some do this at the Site level • I suggest at the Project level

  30. Standardize • Same Workspace everywhere • Replicate • Robocopy • XCOPY is there, too, but we like Robocopy • Part of the Microsoft Windows Resource kit • Lots of options switches

  31. Robocopy – our Options /tee - output to console window, as well as the log file . /z - copy files in restartable mode (survive network glitch) /mir - /MIR : MIRror a directory tree - equivalent to /PURGE plus all subfolders (/E) /np - /NP : No Progress - don't display % copied /r:5 - number of Retries on failed copies - default is 1 million /w:5 - Wait time between retries - default is 30 seconds

  32. WinBatch helps us tremendously .bat files = “black box” for normal users (sometime) WinBatch gives the users “a warm fuzzy” as to what’s going on www.winbatch.com

  33. License Updater Helps both installers and end users

  34. Configuration Updater Helps both installers and end users

  35. Philo Farnsworth invented TV… “I make glass tubes” But his brother-in-law helped make it happen…

  36. As CAD Management and Standards Bearers, we may not know everything about what the “designers” or “production” staff does…. “I make glass tubes” …But we can help create an STANDARD environment to help them realize their ideas
