  2. What is “Fracking”? • Used to extract oil and natural gas. • Fracking Fluid: water, chemicals, and sand. • Started in 1947.

  3. Pros of Fracking • More jobs. • Stimulates economic growth. • Less dependent on foreign countries for oil and gas.

  4. Pros of Frac Sand Mining • More jobs. • Stimulates economic growth. • Landowners can make more money by selling their land to mining companies.

  5. Cons of Fracking • Water contamination. • Negative air emissions. • Large amounts of methane emissions causing global warming. • Triggering small earthquakes.

  6. Cons of Frac Sand Mining • dust would threaten residents’ health. • groundwater could be contaminated. • trucks would bog down traffic and damage roads and highways. • Loss of picturesque landscape. • Loss of tourist industry.

  7. Mediation • Current moratorium in effect for frac sand mining in NE Iowa. • Fracking and frac sand mining is currently necessary. • Fracking and frac sand mining Shouldn’t be growing. • Fracking Shouldn’t be seen as the solution to our oil and natural gas crisis.
