  2. Current proposal and comments • Current Proposal (ICE#119) • selectable shift lever design: • The position appeared initially to drive the vehicle forward, after started the engine. (In case of [P-R-N-D-S-L], D is default mode.) • Comment • Seems not so robust. • ( Customer could use other mode(s) frequently.)

Background of current proposal • Consideration how to run test for multimode. • Importance : Test by predominant mode to reflect real world situation. • (If the predominant mode is only one?  It may be defined as “default mode”.) • If no predominant? : Average of the best and worst case is appropriate. • Consideration of operation frequency for shift lever design. • Our current proposal : Referring to guidance letter of US EPA. • Large PtoM  Low frequency of manual shift operation. • Moderate PtoM without shift paddle on steering wheel  Low frequency • Moderate PtoM with shift paddle on steering wheel  Potentially high frequency • Small PtoM  Potentially high frequency • A key is “Paddle on steering or not”.  Originally, we refer to this in ICE#109. • But why it is key?  difference is “Hand Action”  Simple “hand action” make high frequency. It is the most simple action. The position appeared initially to drive the vehicle forward, after started the engine. (In case of [P-R-N-D-S-L], D is default mode.)

  4. Alternative idea (back to ICE#109) • Reconsideration of default mode for shift lever design. • Current proposal is too much simplified?  Go back to our previous doc. ICE#109. • Again, a key is “Paddle on steering or not”.  No hand removal makes high frequency. • Therefore the alternative idea of default mode is; • - If drivers are able to switch manual operation without removing their hand, there is “no default mode”. • - If drivers are unable to switch manual operation without removing their hand, the automatic position is default mode. 1. The intial position is “D”(Auto mode). 2. To activate manual mode, shift lever needs to be operated by removing the hand from steering wheel. 1. The intial position is “D”(Auto mode). 2. To activate manual mode, just operate shift paddle, so no need to remove the hand from steering wheel. 2. 2. 1. D(Auto mode) is NOT Default position. Tested on Auto & Manual mode.
