  1. Outdoor tiles and everything you need to know about them

  2. Introduction People generally look at tiling and flooring for the indoors, but for those who do not know, flooring and tiling for the outdoors is important too. Whether you are someone who resides in a large space with gardens, patios and or walkways in the outdoors, or someone who resides in a flat in an apartment, it is important get your outdoors correctly tiled. In the former case, outdoor tiles need to be sorted for walkways and sitting areas, whereas for the latter, tiles for stairway, waiting area and balconies.

  3. Tile Rating System When considering outdoor flooring, durability and strength are key. The Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) has a rating system in place for durability and wearing, which run from 1 to 5, with 1 being the least durable. Since floor tiles outside have direct contact with external temperatures, dirt and dust, and also with water (during monsoons), tiles with a “5” rating are ideal.

  4. The Types of Tiles to Consider

  5. Ceramic Made out of fired clay, these are very popular in the market and have been the preferred choice for home design since centuries. Most commonly used for indoors, higher rated ceramic tiles can also be used for outdoor purposes.

  6. Porcelain A new variety of ceramic, not many people are familiar with it.During their making, they are fired at much higher temperatures than ceramic, which make it more durable and dense than ceramic and hence better suited for outdoors. They have high resistance to stains and water, making them almost waterproof. In addition, porcelain tiles can also be made with non-slip textures, making them safe to wet-prone areas and hence apt for outdoor walkway. They usually have a PEI rating of 5, which makes them tougher than other tiles. These tiles are also resistant to freezing, which is especially helpful during chilly winters.

  7. Foam These are soft and light and easy to clean, and are well-suited for exercise rooms, gyms, studios, yoga, lounging and other low-impact activities. Depending on the nature of your residence and purpose of your outdoors. For those who intend to use their outdoor area primarily for exercise and yoga (open air) or for relaxing and lounging, then foam tiles are apt.

  8. Marble Like ceramic, these have also been used in home designing since centuries. Marble is a translucent material, which makes it glow during sunlight. It is well-suited for hot climate and summers as one feels relatively cold underfoot. It is also very easy to clean. In addition, the extreme durability and the ability to withstand any external pressure and sudden weight changes, makes marble tiles well-suited for outdoors.

  9. Takeaway Being aware of types of tiles and their appropriateness towards outdoors tiling, makes it easier when choosing the best outdoor tiles.
