  1. THE SPIRIT OF INDEPENDENCE

  2. Proclamation of 1763 • In order for Britain to maintain peace between the Colonies and Native Americans, they did not allow colonists to move west of the Appalachian mountains. Britain couldn’t afford another war. • This angered the colonists because they just fought and won a war for the territory they were now not allowed to move into.

  3. Proc of 1763

  4. Taxation without Representation • Britain was left with large debts after the French & Indian War. Also, a lot of tension developed between the English colonies and the England. Colonists felt as though England was taking advantage of them and treating them as less than equals. • Britain began imposing taxes on the colonies and the colonies were upset because they had no one to represent them in Parliament. • Video

  5. The Sugar Act • Lowered the tax on imported molasses, however, it gave British officers the right to seize goods from smugglers without going to court. • Britain believed that by lowering the tax colonists would pay the tax instead of try to smuggle goods. • How could the sugar act be used unfairly by the British?

  6. Look at Map on Pg. 124 • View the map and read the Provisions of the Proclamation of 1763. • Because of the Provision, what happened to colonists who had already settled to the West of the Line?

  7. Stamp Act • Britain passed the Stamp Act as another way to get money out of the colonies. The Stamp Act forced colonists to purchase a British stamp on all colonial printed materials. Colonists responded to the Act in several ways: • Sam Adams formed the Sons of Liberty to Protest the Stamp Act • Colonies met at New York at the Stamp Act Congress and wrote King George a letter informing him the tax is unfair • Colonial merchants boycotted all British goods

  8. Townshend Acts • Merchants in England lost so much money from the boycott they begged Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act. Parliament repealed the Stamp Act but then passed the much stricter Townshend Acts. • Stated that England had the authority to control all colonial affairs • Placed taxes on many imported goods • Colonists organized another boycott of British goods
