  2. clandestine (klan DES tin) • secretive, especially in regard to concealing an illicit purpose • The spies planned a clandestine maneuver to take over the castle.

  3. coup (KOO) • a brilliant and sudden overthrow of a government • The peasants planned a coup in order to end the reign of the cruel dictator.

  4. enmity (EN muh tee) • mutual hatred or ill-will • There was a great enmity between the opposing generals, and each one wanted utterly to destroy the other.

  5. heresy (HAIR uh see) • an opinion that disagrees with established, dearly-held beliefs • The leaders of the church accused of heresy anyone who did not subscribe to their beliefs.

  6. implacable (im PLAK uh bul) • impossible to appease • Although in most areas he was pretty easy-going, when it came to some things he was absolutely implacable.

  7. maverick (MAV uh rik) • one who is independent and resists adherence to a group • Jeremy was a maverick; he often felt that the way to get things done was to go against the grain and follow his own heart.

  8. mercurial (mer KYER ee ul) • quick and changeable in mood • Joan’s mercurial temper usually got her into trouble because one minute she’d be happy and the next minute she’d be screaming her head off.
