Bell-ringer. I will hand each of you a paper bag. You need to analyze these bags to find artifacts inside. Make sure to use the worksheet provide to analyze each artifact. Do this in groups of 3-4. Essential Questions. What cultures developed in North America?

  1. Bell-ringer • I will hand each of you a paper bag. • You need to analyze these bags to find artifacts inside. • Make sure to use the worksheet provide to analyze each artifact. • Do this in groups of 3-4.

  2. Essential Questions • What cultures developed in North America? • Why did societies develop? • How were early Americans able to grow crops in the desert?

  3. Goals • You will be able to understand the ritual of the mound builders by drawing your own version of a mound and listing what things you would include in you mound with 100% participation.

  4. Early cultures of North America • Some cultures moved to N. America. • Most lived through farming, which spread from the Mississippi River.

  5. Early N. American cultures also developed in the desert areas of Arizona. • The Hohokam tribe started farming and irrigating crops • Grew cotton, corn, beans, and squash and made pottery

  6. Anasazi • Another tribe that settled in canyons and cliffs of the southwest. • Gathered water that ran off the cliffs • Built pueblos in the cliffs

  7. The Mound Builders • Various mounds found all over southeast- “moundbuilders” • Adena and Hopewell people • Mostly hunter/gatherers • Grew barley, corn, and sunflowers

  8. Review Activity • Now that you know more about the mound builders, I want you to draw you own version of a mound you would like to be buried in. • Then list the objects you would include in your mound and why you would include them. • Please share the markers, crayons, and colored pencils.
