  1. FjordvarmeEnergy from the fjord in a cost efficient way

  2. The principle of Fjordvarme

  3. Heat from the fjord or sea • The system gets water from the fjord. • The intake is fifty meters below the surface where the temperature is stable (8-12C). • The only visible element: A small heat exchanger house (50 sq. Meters) at the fjord. • Tubes that transport the heat are in the ground. • Heat pump technology are used to extract the heat from the water.

  4. All tubes are in the ground The tubes that transport energy are placed in the same trench as the water pipes, sewers and fiber and electricity cables.

  5. Energy purchase redused more than 30 percent. The largest customer (Eid secondary school / Opera House) has an energy purchase of 98 kWh per square meter per year. Average consumption in Norway for similar buildings is 140 kWh per square meter per year.

  6. Heat from the fjord keep the football ground free of ice Sea water is sent through a network of pipes under the runway surface. It is not necessary to use heat pumps to extract heat. Costs related to keeping ice free path is therefore very low.

  7. Experiences after 8 years • Customers claim they cover about 90 percent of their need of energy for heating or cooling. • The average cost savings for customers compared to heating with electricity is between 30 and 50 percent. • In Nordfjordeid 80,000 square meters of buildings are heated by the fjord heat system. • In total 15 public buildings, 15 commercial buildings and 25 residential facilities with a total of 121 flats are heated by the system. • In summer the system is used for cooling. Cooling is almost free.

  8. The economy • The net present value with for the fjord heat system in Nordfjordeid is 11.4 million euros. • The internal rate of return is 13.2 percent. • The system is very profitable even if it is used for only 63 percent of its capacity. • Customers reduce their uncertainty facing major fluctuations in future energy costs. • Using energy from the fjord, the future cost of energy is more predictable for the customers.

  9. The local economy and fjord heat system • The fjord heat system increases the local value creation. • The fjord heat system preventscapital from leakingoutofthelocaleconomybecauseenergy import is reduced. • A fjord heat system also preserves technical skills and knowledge in the municipality. In a time where more and more industry production is done in Asia, this is not without importance.

  10. Canthis be done otherplaces? Yes, ifyou have got water … … and want to make a profitable investment in renewableenergy!
