  1. Professionals are performing regeneration process for transformer oil onsite to prevent ageing of the equipment. The lifecycle of the transformer depends on its insulation system. Transformers manufacturers India mostly use transformer oils and solid insulation (cellulose insulation). The oil offers for at least 80% of the electrical strength in transformer equipment. Manufacturers and experts claim that most of the time it is the damaged insulation behind the transformer failure. Transformer oil offers great insulating properties when insulation paper is well impregnated. The oil raises the breakdown voltage of the insulation that is saturated by it. Oil with low viscosity allows it to permeate cellulose insulation and evacuate heat by conveying it to the cooling system. Oxidation stability feature of the transformer oil makes it eligible to ensure high temperatures and prevent severe damage to the insulation system. Aging of transformer oil is related to oxidation. As water and oxygen contact the oil, the oil oxidizes. Moreover, when cellulose insulation contaminates the oil, it affects the oil quality. Unstable hydrocarbons, oxygen, and other catalyst react with the oil, with such accelerators as heat, result in oxidation.

  2. Moisture has free water, soluble contaminants, and chemicals. It is not possible to make cellulose insulation completely dry. Transformer oil solves more water at extreme temperatures. If the oil and water mixture is cooled, water will easily settle out of the oil. But in cellulose insulation, moisture will distribute itself between the paper and oil. This distribution will be uneven, paper absorbs water present in the oil and retains it, within the highest voltage areas. Contaminants are developed during operation mode. Oil decay products are acidic and attack on cellulose and metals. This results in sludge formation. The formation of sludge becomes speedy in a heavy loaded, hot transformer that is operated by the user in wrong way. Contaminated oil results in shrinkage of insulation, and also destroys varnish and cellulose material. What can be done to prevent oxidation? Constant control of oil condition Check that silica gel in the breather should be maintained. You should not use more than one third of silica gel volume to change color to pink. If you find any oil leakage, repair soon Never add oil contaminated with moisture If the moisture exceeds 20ppm, dry the oil as early as possible. Check the acidity of oil and regenerate oil when required. This is how transformers can be protected against premature aging. For more questions, ask transformers manufacturers India.
