  2. Iron Curtain The political, military, and ideological barrier erected by the Soviet Union after WWII to seal itself off from the West and other non-communist areas.

  3. Containment An act or policy of restricting the territorial growth or ideological influence of another, especially a hostile nation.

  4. Domino Theory If one country is taken over by communism, the near by nations will be taken over one after another.

  5. DMZ Demilitarized Zone. A strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea

  6. NATO North Atlantic Treaty Organization. United States and other Western European countries.

  7. Warsaw Pact An organization Formed in Warsaw, Poland. Collective defense under a joint military command.

  8. McCarthyism The practice of making accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence.

  9. Red Scare The promotion of fear of a potential rise of communism or radical leftism, used by anti-leftist proponents.

  10. Brinkmanship The technique or practice of maneuvering a dangerous situation to the limits of tolerance or safety in order to secure the greatest advantage.

  11. Massive Retaliation The doctrine that the best way to deter aggression is to threaten a potential aggressor with devastation by atomic bombs.

  12. Arms Race A competition between two or more parties to have the best armed forces.

  13. Flexible Response Gave U.S. the capability to respond to aggression across the spectrum of warfare, not limited only to nuclear arms.
