  2. Warm-up 11/30 • Answer the following: • How was your Thanksgiving? What did you do? Anything interesting? • In your red book, turn to Chapter 18 (p. 546) and flip through the pages. Look at the blue and red heading, along with the pictures. Write me three sentences telling me what you think this goal is going to be about? • In your own words, what is imperialism

Imperialism • What it is? • Stronger nations extend their economic, political, or military influence (control/power) over weaker territories • European country establishing colonies for centuries (Africa – only two free countries) • Why the U.S. and other nations take part in Imperialism? • Desire to be a world power and have military strength • A thirst for raw materials and new markets • Belief in Cultural Superiority

  6. Desire for Military Strength • Alfred T. Mahan – Admiral in the U.S. Navy. Response for modernizing our Navy and making it the third largest in the world • If you are going to be powerful, you must have a strong military presence

  7. Thirst for New markets • America had become an industrial society and we were making more things than we needed, therefore, we using imperialism to gain new markets to sell our goods in • New lands also had raw materials ex: wood, crops, sugar cane

  8. Cultural Superiority • One of our excuses/reasons to spread our influence of another county • Josiah Strong was a big advocate of the superiority of the Anglo-Saxon (white race) • It is our duty and responsibly to spread Christianity and “civilization” to the world’s “inferior peoples – the idea goes back to Social Darwinism

  10. Purchasing Alaska • William Seward – arranged the purchase of Alaska, from Russia for 7.2 million dollars (our largest state) • “Seward’s Icebox” or “Seward’s Folly” • Averaged at 2 cents an acre and full of raw materials

Annexing Hawii • Queen Liliuokalani – last ruler of Hawaii • Hawaii was forced to annex because of the rich sugar cane plantation owners on the island - Didn’t want to pay tariffs • The plantation owners and the marines helped “persuade” the Queen to allow Hawaii to be annexed into America • Pearl Harbor and refueling when going to Asia
