The byproducts of these switching arcs degrade the oil’s breakdown strength. It is the dielectric breakdown strength of the oil that determines the oil’s ability to quench the arc. Thus, the oil becomes a wear component that must be checked and maintained for optimal performance. • On-line DGA monitors can be justified on main transformer tanks but could these be used in our PFN’s, thyratron vessels and others ? • This could be part of important preventive maintenance and avoid costly machine downtime with big implications of components breakdown immersed into dielectric oil.
