  2. Basic Negatives • Ne…pas • Ne…pas du tout • Ne…plus • Ne… point • Ne… guère • Ne…jamais • Ne… rien

  3. Basic Negatives • These basic negative forms all follow the same rules of placement. The two pieces that form the negative surround the conjugated verb in the sentence.

  4. Basic negatives: Present Nous avons cinq chats. Nous n’avons pas cinq chats. Nous n’avons plus cinq chats.

  5. Basic Negatives: PC Ils ont habité à Paris. Ils n’ont pas habité à Paris. Ils n’ont jamais habité à Paris. Notice that the negative structure surrounds, the conjugated helper verb and the past particple comes after.

  6. Basic Negatives: Imparfait Elle aimait la musique rock. Elle n’aimait pas la musique rock. Elle n’aimait guère la musique rock.

  7. Basic Negatives: Summary Any time there is ONE conjugated verb, the basicnegative structures surround the conjugated verb. Je neparlepas allemand. Il nemangeaitjamais les fruits. Tu neferasplus tes études à CSUF. Vous neseriezpoint si méchant!

Basic Negatives: Summary Any time there is a combination of a conjugated verb and a non-conjugated verb (past participle or infinitive), the negative structure surrounds the verb and the non-conjugated verb follows. Il n’estpastombé du bus. Elles n’auraient guèredormi. Je nevaisrienacheter. Nous ne voulonspas du tout faire le ménage.

  9. Ne… personne / nulle part Ne… personne and ne… nulle part vary slightly from the basic negatives. When there is only one conjugated verb, they follow the same rules and surround the verb. Je ne détestepersonne. Vous n’irieznulle part cet été.

  10. Ne… personne / nulle part Any time there is a combination of a conjugated verb and a non-conjugated verb (past participle or infinitive), the negative structure surrounds BOTH the verb and the non-conjugated verb! Elle n’aparlé à personne à la boum. Tu nevasvoyagernulle part après le lycée?

  11. Ne… ni… ni… Ne… ni… ni… is a specialized negative that is placed in a sentence based on the word or words being stressed. Je n’aimeni les maths ni les langues. Il nefaisaitni chaud ni froid. Nous n’avonsnilu le livre nivu le film. Ils n’ontmangéni les sandwiches ni la pizza.

  12. Ne… aucun(e) Ne… aucun and ne… aucune: • Are always singular(just choose masc/fem) • Always precede the noun they modify (or stress) Je n’aivoulu poseraucunequestion. Ce restaurant nesertaucunsandwichs.

  13. Ne… que (only) Like ne… aucun(e), ne… que is placed directly in front of the noun it modifies. Tu nemangesquedes bonbons. Elle n’aregardéqueles films d’horreur. Vous neboirezquedu coca. Ils nevontjouerqu’au football.

  14. Personne, Jamais + Rien These three negations can stand alone as answers to questions. Personne answers QUI? Qui va au zoo? Personne. Jamais answers QUAND? Quand visiteriez-vous la France? Jamais. Rien answers QU’EST-CE QUE? Qu’est-ce qu’ils ont fait ce week-end? Rien.
