    2. From the Curriculum Statement “ Critical Reading is a shared activity based on short texts chosen by the teacher to address a range of text types, which may include prose, verse and texts with graphical or visual elements.”

    4. Assessment Report 2010 “ On average, the critical reading was the strongest section of the paper for most students. This is a pleasing indicator that students have developed the appropriate skills and understandings to tackle unseen texts.”

    5. Assessment Report 2010 The most successful answers involved the following features. Careful management of time and attention to the proportions indicated for each question; Paragraphs that were planned and organised and thus clear and cohesive; Answers that involved the student expressing ideas in their own words and then supporting those ideas with close references to the text; Fluently embedded quotation into the line of reasoning in each response; An awareness of the text types (opinion piece and review); An awareness of the intended audience; An analysis of techniques that involved accurate nomenclature, reference to examples and exploration of the effect of the technique upon the reader; Answers structured around comparison in question (d) where similarities and differences were the driving feature rather than a cursory afterthought.
