  4. Design Norms • Cultural Appropriateness: • Through the design, materials, and construction methods of the common Cambodian. • Transparency: • Communication about the simplicity and reliability of the design. • Integrity: • Design will facilitate relationships between people and their land. Problem Review of Project Design Norms Preliminary Solutions Resources

  5. Sanitary Facility • Requirements • 2 Sinks, 2 Toilets, and 2 Showers • Gravity Fed Water System • Waste Removal Alternatives • Latrine Pits • Stabilization Ponds • Septic Tank • Feasibility • Sanitation is necessary and achievable anywhere http://www.rdic.org Problem Review of Project Design Norms Preliminary Solutions Resources

  6. Water Distribution • Requirements: • Water to supply sanitary facility and irrigation • Filters for clean water • Feasibility: • Existing 140 ft well • Dry season irrigation • Detention pond, runoff collection • Water from the well to supplement • Safe Drinking Water http://www.rdic.org Problem Review of Project Design Norms Preliminary Solutions Resources

  7. Common Building • Requirements: • 2 stories • 6m x 12m (about 20’ x 40’) • 10-12 dorm rooms • Use local style and materials • Feasibility: • Large groups purposes • Keep costs low • Long life in wet conditions • Size to fit in requests • Obstacles: • Finding information • Cultural Differences Problem Review of Project Design Norms Preliminary Solutions Resources

  9. Renewable Energy Source • Requirements: • Provide Energy to the Common Building and house • Must turn a variable supply into a dependant AC source • Feasibility: • Solar is feasible • Hydro is questionable • Wind is no longer an option • Preliminary Design: • 6-10 x 175 W solar panels • Charge controller • 10-14 maintenance free batteries • Inverter Problem Review of Project Design Norms Preliminary Solutions Resources

  10. Bridge Design • Requirements: • Required to span the distance including the added depth of the wet season • Needs to be able to support the load of a small vehicle or tractor • Alternatives: • Three types of designs that are feasible at this point are slab bridges, truss bridges, and culvert with land bridge • Feasibility: • The biggest obstacle at this point is not having enough data to properly model each design Problem Review of Project Design Norms Preliminary Solutions Resources

  11. Obstacles in Design • Distance • Site specifics • Communication • Climate/Weather • Cultural Differences • Standard building practices • Access to materials and site Problem Review of Project Design Norms Preliminary Solutions Resources
