Energy Consumption • Electricity - £9.6m – 107GWh – 55,825tCO2(e) • Gas - £3.5m – 161GWh – 29,581tCO2(e) • Water - £2m – 856,000m3 • Oil - £60,000 – 805,605kWh - 239tCO2(e) • Carbon Footprint (Scope 1, 2 & 3) – 86,000tCO2(e) • Lighting Power Consumption (conservative guess 25%) • £2.4m • 26.75GWh • 14,000tCO2(e)

Energy Projections • Projected energy price rises – Top out at £20m (2020) • HEFCE emissions target set as 43% of 2005 consumption by 2020 (85% by 2050) • Presently at 5% above 2005 levels • University increasing in size: • Income: +57% (2005 - £514m) (2013 - £807m) • Student Numbers: +15% (2005 – 35,018) (2013 – 39,953) • Area: +137% (2005 – 1.21km2) (2013 – 2.87km2) • 24hr operation of buildings • 3 semester academic years

Opportunities • Funding – HEFCE/Salix/DECC • Legislation – CRC/ESOS/Electricity Demand Reduction • Part L – Consequential Improvements • Combined Heat and Power/Biomass • Lighting - can be minimal disruption • Greater flexibility in design • Easy to calculate and justify savings • £1.6m spent on LED Projects since 2009 • Student pressure – will seek value due to tuition fees • Carbon Reduction Technicians (CRT’s)

John Ryland’s University Library – LED Lighting • Initial Problems • Over 2,000 T12 tubes of various length installed in 1960’s • Energy in-efficient • Short lifespan – constant replacement program (manpower) • Getting more difficult to source • Colour variation as tubes reach end of life • Disposal costs • Cast concrete ceiling • Library open 6,568hrs/year
