  2. Setting Goals Study Skills… • Short term and long term goals • What grades do you want to EARN in your classes? • What do you need to do to accomplish those goals?

Planning Study Skills... • Before you start plan ahead • Use lists….keep track of what you need to accomplish • Develop a plan and follow through! • Determine what you will need before starting • Prioritize you work • What needs to be done first? • What will take the most time? • What’s it worth?

  5. Organization Study Skills… • Keep locker, notebook neat • Use a planner • Keep track of assignments, projects, and papers

  6. Environment Study Skills... • Set up a study area • Be comfortable • Keep distractions away • Clear off study area • Don’t take phone calls during study time • Turn off the radio/T.V. • Keep supplies close at hand

  7. Homework tips Study Skills… • Do the worst first • Break up tasks • Separate reading and math assignments for variety • Break big projects into smaller parts • Memorization? • Study early and test yourself later • Use a tape recorder for lists • Take breaks and reward yourself

  8. Reading Effectively Study Skills… • Skim the chapter before reading • Read words in bold • Read vocabulary • Read headings of paragraphs • Read questions at the end of the chapter

  9. Time Management Study Skills… • Use class time and flex effectively • Set up consistent study time every day • Get into a routine • Charting your time

Active Listening • Keep alert and active during lectures • What is being said, what is important? • What is the major theme of the discussion? • Ask questions • Pay attention to peers questions and comments • Answer the following questions • Who? What ? When? Where? Why ? How? • If its written on the board its important • Write it down

  11. Study Skills Lesson Date your notes everyday to help you know what happened each day in class October 11,2001 Falling asleep in class is not a good way to show you are Interested. Use charts and graphs to help illustrate points in class Place a headline or topic at the top of the page for clarity. HW assignment pgs 63-77 Use abbreviations to save time What my counselor told me Number or bullet lists to keep important points together 1. Attendance in school is a good idea 2. Studying for tests will probably increase my grades 3. If I fall asleep in class, someone may draw on me (page 52) Highlight anything that is important Review notes before each class Review your notes and highlight important material

Test Taking Tips • Tips for True/False questions • Look for key words: always, never, every, all, and non are usually false... • Statements with often, sometimes, most, many...are usually true. • Come prepared, books pencils, pens,calculator, etc… • Read all the directions…Read all the questions and possible answers before marking answer

  17. Test Taking Tips • Multiple choice….eliminate options to increase your odds • Double check all answers • Mark questions that you want to return to

  18. If you miss school…. • If you know you are going to be out • Let your teachers know ahead of time • Pick up your assignments • If you miss school because of illness • Make sure you let your teachers know you were sick • Get homework assignments you missed

  21. Learning Styles • Students learn in many ways, but for most students, one method stands out. • Why is this important? • Research shows that students can perform better in tests if they change study habits to fit their own personal learning styles.
