Semat Theory: Observations on Defining Concepts Rigorously

The Semat Theory track has prompted a need for rigorous definitions of concepts, raising important questions about domain and range. This collaborative effort focuses on multifaceted topics, emphasizing clear purpose and minimal complexity. The goal is to provide clear explanations, rigor, analysis, validation, and synthesis, incorporating representation schemes and maintaining compositional and interoperable properties. This exercise aims to reduce complexity and avoid unnecessary complications, supporting the ongoing evolution of science.

  1. SematTheory Track

  2. SomeObservations • Many requests to have some form of rigorous definitions of the defined concepts • This triggers some important questions immediately: • Domain / range of the rigorous may be even formal definitions Keep in mind multifaceted / multiperson effort • What are the concepts we like to cover (c.f. position statements and previous discussion) • Keep in mind that science is an ongoing process (plan for change)

  3. Someconsiderations • Ingredients needed: • Representation schemes (definition of languages) • There should be a clear purpose • In some sense should be minimal • Purpose of this special exercise • Explanation, rigor • Analysis • Validation / Verification • Synthesis

  4. Someusefulproperties • Compositionality • Interoperability Also important • Pragmaticsofthe language • Help to reduce complexity and do not introduce additional (mostly artifical) complexity
