What is BSF? • The aim of the BSF programme is to transformsecondary education so that it is fit for purpose in the 21st century. • The lever is a massive injection of capital for: • Construction • Furniture and Equipment • ICT • The total value of the programme over 12 years is around £30,000,000,000 • Of this, 10% (£3,000,000,000) is for ICT infrastructure, equipment and services.

  3. What does Building Schools for the Future have to offer to the ECM agenda? • Money - including 10% that is for ICT • Challenge • New and refurbished physical and virtual ‘school’ environments • Opportunities • Partnership through the LEP can add to a LA’s/ school’s capacity to deliver

  4. Be Healthy BSF can facilitate…… • the co-location of a multi-agency team that can support the emotional, health and welfare needs of young people and those of their community; • the provision of sports facilities for a wide range of activities that include cardio-vascular monitoring for both the school’s young people and the local community; • the development of catering facilities and dining areas that reflect a commitment to healthy eating; • the building of ‘green’ schools.

  5. Be Healthy “We look forward to a future where we can fully support students’ health needs through appropriate facilities for dining, space to exercise and rooms for counselling and medical needs.”

  6. Stay Safe BSF can facilitate…… • secure school entry/exit; • CCTV – for both internal and external monitoring: young people routinely request this for spaces where they feel unsafe; • the sharing of data between agencies; • monitoring and analysis of tracking of behaviour incidents to create a ‘safer environment’; • the establishment of ‘Safer School Partnerships’; • safe places and ways to say that you are being bullied or are harmed in anyway.

  7. Be Safe “Our students feel most unsafe when exposed to the outside world, particularly the busy street. They share, with staff, a vision of a secure environment where the premises are secured and under the surveillance of security cameras. Our new school must be secure for students but welcoming to the community and families. There will be locker facilities where students may secure their possessions. We aspire to the use of biometric information to improve access whilst diminishing workload and retaining security.”

  8. Enjoy and AchieveBSF can facilitate…… • enjoyable, meaningful and accessible learning for all young people – including those for whom attending school is problematic; • recognition of learning that takes place outside of school.

  9. Enjoy and Achieve “Our new school will provide an environment where all can enjoy and achieve. The quality of our education provision will continue to rise and it will be delivered in a public building that exudes civic pride and makes a clear statement about the value of our children and their education. Our school will be a place where the full scope of personal achievement will be recognised and where our students can demonstrate not only their academic achievement but also their inter-personal skills, sporting and artistic achievements, special interests and career aspirations.”

  10. Make a positive contributionBSF can facilitate…… • the engagement of young people through the provision of ‘student voice’ forums; • monitoring and analysis of behaviour incidents to understand and reduce anti-social behaviour, including bullying; • links between the school and both its local community and wider, global communities; • focus a LA’s thinking on its provision for young people who are looked after and for those who have learning difficulties and disabilities.

  11. Positive Contribution “We are proud of our family ethos. In our school all students are known and collective responsibility is promoted in a climate of high expectation. We will continue to promote our Catholic ethos and caring culture. We will be linked to the outside world through our charitable work, school visits and use of technology. We wish to be a school at the centre of its physical community and will promote behaviour from our students that makes a positive contribution to society and the local economy. We are a multi-ethnic school and we will continue to develop respect for diversity and understanding of that which we all share.”

Achieve Economic Well-Being BSF can facilitate…… • a personalised approach to learning that reflects a commitment to every young person fulfilling their potential; • vocational and work-based learning; • the promotion of lifelong learning for the whole community; • focus a LA’s thinking on community regeneration and the economic well-being of the whole community.

  13. Achieve Economic Well Being “Our new school will recognize the changing world in which we live. Our students and their families have diverse origins and destinies. We seek to maximize opportunities beyond the age of statutory schooling by equipping students for life in a modern economy. Hence our duel objective of developing autonomous learners through varied learning pathways.”

  14. Are there any threats to ECM outcomes in BSF? • We need to be aware that the creation of a virtual learning environment where young people have the opportunity to learn where and when suits them best may deny some the safe ‘haven’ that is school. • And others…….?
