  1. Habits of the Mind and Themes of History

  2. Why use the Habits of the Mind? • To do what historians do • To become “interpreters” of evidence • To use these skills today, tomorrow, and far into the future

  3. Why Use Six Essential Themes? • So history does not become name, date, place; name, date place • What does a theme do? • Focuses like a lens • What are they • Civilization, cultural diffusion, and innovation • Human interaction with the environment • Values, beliefs, political ideas, and institutions • Conflict and cooperation • Comparative history of major developments • Patterns of social and political interaction

  4. How do we visualize those themes? • Your task --- • Create a poster that symbolizes your theme • 1 central image • Title (the theme name) • Separate sheet of paper that explains to me: WHY you chose that image

  5. After you read… • Summarize two of the daily activities the Nacirema do during their “body ritual.” • Name one daily activity of the Nacirema that is similar to a ritual you have. Name one daily activity that is different than a ritual you have. • Do you agree with the final statement that the Nacirema are “magic-ridden” people? Why or why not?
