Brazil Population • Brazil is the fifth largest population in the world. • Today there is more than 155 million people. • Two thirds of these people live in towns and cities and most live along the coast. • Brazil’s population mainly consists of Roman Catholics, many Protestants, some African tribe religions, mostly Candombles, Jewish, Buddhists, and a very small amount of Muslims.

Roman Catholic • About 74% of the population. • Largest Catholic population in the world. • Symbols include the star, the blessed trinity, the three kings, angel’s wings, church roofs with three points, and the bishops mitres. • Other symbols are fish, doves, thorns on the crown of Jesus, the three forns of eternity: heaven, hell, and purgatory, the chalice is another symbol.

  4. Protestant • 15.4% of the population. • Very similar symbols to Roman Catholic. • Symbols include: the dove, the blessed trinity, fish, star, pointed church roofs, and the three kings. • Other symbols are Jesus falling three times during the passion, the chalice, and the thorns on Jesus head.

  5. Candomble • An African voodoo-like religion. It is the dominant African tribe religion in Brazil. • Use three major symbols. • The major symbol includes two pitchforks rapped around a cross. • The other two include the Akua’ba which is a carved figure used to promote fertility and protection for pregnant women. • The other symbols are veves used in rituals.

  6. Jewish • The star of David has become the “Symbol of Judaism”. • The dreidal is played during Hanukkah. • The Jewish people wear kippahs while worshipping in the temple, kippahs have four triangles on top. • Candles symbolize light and hope for Jewish people, the shape of the candle holder is traiangular.

  7. Buddhism • There are 8 major symbols for Buddhists. • The parasol, or canopy. • The flag of victory. • The infinite knot. • The conch shell. • The urn. • The wheel is another symbol of Buddhism, along with the star with the 8 symbols on it.

  8. Muslims • There are 0.01% or 28,000 Muslim people in Brazil. • The major symbol for Muslim people is the crescent with the star, it is even on the flags of Muslim countries. • Muslim wedding symbols contain stars. • Muslim temples have pointed roof tops.
