The Right to a Remedy(aka Right to Redress) • Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (must ID product, list origin, and qty) • National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act (1966, changed design of cars to make safer including seatbelts, improved road conditions) • Truth in Food Labeling Act • Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (eliminated abusive practices and provided ability to dispute) • All were put in place to ensure that legal remedy could be sought • Remedy may also be sought through guarantee or express warranties • Implied warranties are same, just not written

  3. REMEDY CONT’D • express warranty: made orally or in writing • implied warranty: unwritten, usually imposed by law to meet certain standards (ex. pharmaceuticals)

  4. The Right to Consumer Education • Focuses on consumer decisions that relate to the interaction between consumers and producers in our economic system. TRANSLATED: The buying choices you make affect both you as an individual as well as the economy at large

  5. The Right to Service • Consumers should expect convenience, courtesy, and responsiveness to needs • Encourages businesses to make sure that products/services meet the quality and performance levels claimed

  6. Your Job As A Consumer • Be honest: shoplifting isn’t the only way people steal… • Be reasonable: have cause for complaint, explain your issue calmly, ask for manager or owner if you need to, write a letter. Still not satisfied? Make a report to BBB or contact Legal Aid Society. • Report unethical practices: this helps to protect future consumers. • Be informed: knowing is half the battle… • Be involved: let government officials know of changes you believe are necessary to protect consumers.
