  1. Note and Notice Aha Moment

  2. Aha Moments • Your own • Mysteries/suspense • Math – when you finally figure how to solve the problem • These are Aha Moments • When you realize something, and that realization, in some way, changes our actions.

  3. Aha Moment • This is that moment when a character realizes or understands something that until that point he had not known. • That realization will probably change his or her actions in some way • Helps the reader to better understand how the character’s actions are related to the conflict, the progression of the plot, or theme.

  4. Aha Moment – Text Clues • Text Clues – phrases that indicate either a sudden or a growing awareness that point to some understanding that the character has finally reached • Examples: • Suddenly I realized • Now I understand • In an instant I saw • It came to me in a flash • I now knew • I finally understood that • It occurred to me • These clues tell you that this moment is important.

  5. Anchor Question • Once you identify the Aha Moment, stop and ask yourself • How might this change things? • If the character figured out a problem, you probably just learned about the conflict. • If the character understood a life lesson, you probably just learned the theme.
