Four Content Areas of the New GED® Test • Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA) • Mathematical Reasoning • Focus: integrated reading and writing tasks that require test-takers to read complex texts, analyze arguments and use text-based evidence to support reasoning. Test Time – 3 hours • Focus: deep mastery of a core set of quantitative reasoning skills relevant to a wide range of career and post-secondary pathways. Test Time – 1 ¼ hour

The four content areas of the new GED® test • Science • Social Studies • Science and social studies practices: reasoning skills drawn from both CCSS Mathematics and ELA as well as nationally recognized science and social studies curricular standards. • Content Topics: essential science and social studies content that is both relevant to the lives of adult test-takers and typical of what is taught in a high school course of study. • Science Test Time – 1 ¼ hour • Social Studies Test Time – 1 ½ hour

GEDTS and Pearson VUE • GED Testing Service® is the sole owner of the GED Test series • Pearson VUE is the technology partner selected by GED Testing Service ® to provide access to the computer-based version of the exam • In January 2014, the GED® test will only be available through third-party Pearson VUE testing centers approved by the Florida Department of Education to offer the test

Full GED® Testing on Computer in January 2014 • Enhanced score reporting (sub-scores) • Multiple performance levels on the same test (high school equivalency plus career and college readiness indicators) • New question types (that measure critical cognitive skills) that are not possible in the pencil-and-paper format.

What computer skills are necessary? • CBT user interface is designed so that a learner with only basic computer skills is able to test successfully on computer • Basic keyboarding/typing skills • Familiarity with hardware (a keyboard and mouse) and software (scrolling, graphics, and exhibit windows)

Resources for test-takers • Tutorials available at the testing center and online to help test-takers become familiar with the CBT format before testing. • Access to tutorials to practice using the computer-based system both before and during the testing session • A tutorial (to be released summer 2013) that specifically focuses on the computer skills needed for the new question types.

  22. Usability of CBT for test takers • Usability study results demonstrated that prepared participants—even those with low computer experience (the most basic keyboarding skills)—were able to follow the instructions and learn to use the computer functions required for GED® testing on computer.

CBT Pricing • Single statewide price (no variation by testing center) • 2002 GEDTS® test series is priced by the Module/Sub-test • $26 per sub-test • $130 for all sub-tests ($120 of this is the GEDTS® price) • GEDTS price for the 2014 test will stay the same; however, the price may differ by module • Will be four modules instead of five • FLDOE will need to assess what our testing fee will need to be when we find out the final pricing situation

Current GED® CBT in Florida • Florida launched CBT on July 30, 2012 • 13 testing sites are open through 10 institutions Alachua County Baker County Broward County Citrus County Northwest FL SC South Florida SC Pensacola SC Florida SC at Jax (3) Florida Gateway College Seminole State College(2)

Who can offer the GED CBT in the pilot? • FLDOE will approve any existing testing center or addendum site for a testing center • Other academic Pearson VUE sites may be considered in the future, depending on whether the current access is adequate to meet testing needs • For example, if there is a two month wait for appointments, additional sites may be considered • Goal: To have any current site offering GED on computer by late fall of 2013 to ease the transition to the new exam

Underage Test-takers • State law says “A candidate for a high school equivalency diploma shall be at least 18 years of age on the date of the examination, except that in extraordinary circumstances, as provided for in rules of the district school board of the district in which the candidate resides or attends school, a candidate may take the examination after reaching the age of 16.”

  31. Accommodations • All accommodations for CBT have to be centrally reviewed and approved by GED Testing Service

  32. Process for Students with Accommodations • For GED CBT, the submission of accommodations paperwork bypasses the Chief Examiner • Paperwork should be sent directly to the Florida GED Testing Office

Options for Correctional Facilities from GEDTS • Become a PVTC (non-public site) • Use a sub-contractor to deliver testing • Sub-contractor provides administrative workstation that can network with computer’s in the facilities lab/classrom • Sub-contractor brings a “mobile kit” to the facility and takes it away at the end of the testing session

Department of Juvenile Justice programs • The government/corrections solution may be used for closed access DJJ facilities. • If a district currently has responsibility for the testing program at these facilities (through addendum sites), it is the assumption that they will need to open a Pearson VUE corrections solution site in this location. • FLDOE are discussing these issues with other FLDOE staff and DJJ staff

Department of Juvenile Justice programs • Most individuals in DJJ custody will be transported to facilities • Candidates will need photo identification • We are investigating what type of photo identification would be acceptable • Question: What is currently used for DJJ students transported to testing centers?

  40. Reaching out to Test Takers to Complete the 2002 Series

  41. 15 months and counting to the end of the current series • The state and the local testing centers have 15 months of planning and implementation to closeout the 2002 GED® test series • Individuals who have started the 2002 series must complete by December 2013 • Non-completers will have to start over on the new assessment in January 2014
