Scope These lessons are intended for students in grades 3-5 • Lesson 1: Pretest and Dewey Decimal Classification PowerPoint • Lesson 2: Students will work with a partner in one of the 10 main classifications. They will choose to: • Create a rhyme to help their peers remember the section • Create a movement to help their peers remember the section • Create an illustration to help their peers remember the section • Lesson 3: Play Dewey Games linked in PowerPoint • Lesson 4: Posttest

  3. How would you classify books? • What if you had a large pile of books? • How could you organize them? • How would you make sure you can find the exact book you need whenever you need it? • Back in 1872, One very smart man figured out a way to organize thousands of books. His name was…

Melvil Dewey • He created the Dewey Decimal Classification when he was 21 years old! • Before Dewey invented his system of classification, each library organized their materials in their own way. Usually only the librarian was able to find specific materials. • The Dewey Decimal system is composed of 10 main categories.

  5. Dewey Decimal Classification • Every book subject is assigned a number between 000 and 999. • This number is called the Call Number. • The call number appears on the spine of the book. Call Number
