  2. What is Hypnosis? Hypnosis is a state of high levels of concentration and attention in combination with a temporary pause in peripheral awareness (Freeman 216).

The Four Major Components of Hypnosis are: • “Absorption of the capacity to contemplate deeply selected theme or focal point • Controlled alteration of the person’s attention • Dissociation (the capacity to compartmentalize different aspects of the individual’s experience) • Suggestibility (the capacity for heightened responsiveness to instructions)” (Freeman 216).

  4. Types of Hypnosis There are many different types of hypnosis, and the main ones include: • Traditional hypnosis • Ericksonian hypnosis • NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) hypnosis • Self hypnosis

  5. What Does Hypnosis Help? • Alleviate Pain • Burn Pain • Fibromyalgia Pain • Procedural Pain • Asthma • Weight Loss • Smoking • Anxiety and Phobias (Freeman 225-247)

  6. Side Effects Side Effects • The psychotic symptoms or acute panic attacks • Depression with the possibility of suicidal behavior • Symptom substitution • Symptoms resulting from inadvertent suggestions • Masking physical pathology (Kouguell) Thewlife.com

  7. Who Can Safely Use Hypnosis? Almost anyone can use hypnosis! But it really only works for people who want to use it and put effort into it.

  8. Who Should Avoid Using Hypnosis? Other People who should avoid hypnosis: • Someone intoxicated • Someone who does not want to be hypnotized • Someone with an IQ lower than 30 “Hypnosis is not generally recommended if you: have a history of epilepsy or epileptic seizures …eating disorders Have any psychotic illness, have a history of suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts you use/are addicted to 'hard' drugs”(Waller).

  9. Where Should You Find a Hypnotist • Don’t go to the grocery store …or Craigslist. • There are better ways to find a hypnotherapist in your local area!
