  2. Steps to conjugate in the Imp. Subjunctive • Start by using the box 5 preterite conjugation. • ie...hablar - hablaron • 2. Find the Imp. Subjunctive stem by dropping the “RON” off of the conjugation. • ie...hablaron - habla X

  3. Steps to conjugate in the Imp. Subjunctive 3. Add the appropriate endings se ra ses ras se ra semos ramos sen ran (note the imperfect subjunctive has TWO forms. A “s” form and an “r” form. The “s” form is more literary and the “r” form is used more in speaking. We will typically just use the “r” form.)

  4. Irregulars and Stem Changes The imperfect Subjunctive does not have any stem changes or irregulars to speak of. Only what naturally occurs in the box 5 form of the preterite. **Watch out for irregular Preterites!

  5. Watch out for Orthographic spelling changes We cannot change the original sound of a letter by conjugating: This happens PRIMARILY with the yo form of AR verbs whose stems end in C,G,or Z c - qu g - gu z - c

  6. Watch out for ER/IR verbs whose stem ends in a vowel ie…leer leí - leímos leíste - - leyó - leyeron

  7. Preterite Stem Changes • 3 Onlys • Only w/ ir verbs • Only one letter stem change • Only in the slipper (box 3 & 5) ie...dormir durmió durmieron

  10. Progression of Tenses • The imperfect subjunctive is used following the: • Preterite • Imperfect • Conditional • Pluperfects *

  11. Si Clauses • The imperfect subjunctive is used following the: • Como si clauses • Si clauses where the conditional is used in the other clause.
