  10. The Points Formulas • Information from College Transcript(s): • 1 College Semester Unit = 1 Education Unit • 1 College Quarter Unit = 2/3 of 1 Education Unit • Information from POST Profile or Other Training Document(s): • 20 Hours of Law Enforcement Training* = 1 Training Point *The POST Commission shall determine acceptable law enforcement training.

  11. Requirements: Intermediate Certificate Points and experience needed to meet POST’s minimum requirements: + + Degree or Education Units Law Enforcement Experience Training Points* • Bachelor’s Degree + 2 Years Experience + 0 Training Pts • Associate Degree + 4 Years Experience + 0 Training Pts • 45 Education Units + 4 Years Experience + 45 Training Pts • 30 Education Units + 6 Years Experience + 30 Training Pts • 15 Education Units + 8 Years Experience + 15 Training Pts *Note: Excess education units may be applied toward training points on a unit-for-point basis. However, excess training points cannotbe applied toward education units.

  12. Example #1 Officer Joe Friday calls Evalina in the POST Certificates Unit regarding qualifying for the Intermediate Certificate. With 6 years of service, Joe needs a minimum of 30 college unitsand 30 training pointsto qualify. Joe’s concerned because he only has 20 training points. Joe tells Evalina that he also has 40 college semester units. Based on that, and because he only needs 30 semester units, he can apply the extra 10 semester units toward his training points. The combined points will give him the 30/30 that he needs. Evalina instructs Joe to submit his application to his Training Manager. Because excess education units can be used on a unit-for-point basis, Joe qualifies for the Intermediate Certificate – even though he didn’t possess the necessary 30 training points initially. His combined education and training totals 60 points. Hey, Evalina, it’s Officer Joe Friday. Hi, Joe. How can I help you? Refer to PAM Section B, Regulation 1011(a)(3)(D).

However, excess training points cannotbe applied toward education units.

REMEMBER: Only Specialized academy graduates can earn Specialized certificates from POST.
