  2. At a Glance • Location: East of the Visitor Center and Scenic Loop on Calico Basin • Length: ½mile round trip • Difficulty: Easy; wheelchair accessible • Estimated Minimum Hike Time: 30 minutes • Facilities: Four vault toilets; two near picnic area, two across parking lot. No water available.

  4. Why a boardwalk? Centuries of heavy use was damaging the fragile area. The boardwalk lets you visit but keeps the endemic plants, or plants only found here, safe. Please stay on the boardwalk!

  7. There are many signs along the boardwalk

  8. It looks different up here, doesn’t it?

  9. More signs as we hike

  10. If you look closely, you might see animal tracks in the sand!

  11. Don’t forget to look up too! the moon

  12. The boardwalk curves a little

  13. Before getting to petroglyphs that may be thousands of years old!

  14. Maybe we’ll do an activity here

  15. Back on the boardwalk

  16. You might be able to see the spring here

  17. What a difference water can make!

  18. We’re almost done

  19. But first we’ll pass some butterfly lilies(and maybe a butterfly)

  20. Just have to head back down

  21. We made it! Now the lizard wants to hike too.
