  1. Serving the Son of God Pastor Nathan Weller January 27, 2018 Series: Introductions

  2. This introduction gives us a picture of a gospel shaped life

  3. 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. --Romans 1.1-7 ESV

  4. The gospel is about Jesus

  5. 3 ...concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations... --Romans 1.3-5 ESV

  6. “It is about him, not us. We never grasp the gospel until we understand that it is not fundamentally a message about our lives, dreams, or hopes. The gospel speaks about, and transforms, all of those things, but only because it isn’t about us. It is a declaration about God’s Son…” --Tim Keller--

  7. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” --Romans 1.16-17 ESV

  8. The entire Bible tells us about the gospel

  9. God promised this Good News long ago through his prophets in the holy Scriptures. --Romans 1.2 NLT

  10. Sharing the gospel was all Paul cared about

  11. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints... --Romans 1.1, 6-7 ESV

  12. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ --Philippians 3.8 ESV

  13. ...through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations... --Romans 1.5 ESV

  14. “We are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone.” --Martin Luther--

  15. Obedience of faith means that Jesus is both your savior and Lord

  16. “When I saw that they were not following the truth of the gospel message, I said to Peter in front of all the others, “Since you, a Jew by birth, have discarded the Jewish laws and are living like a Gentile, why are you now trying to make these Gentiles follow the Jewish traditions?” --Galatians 2.14 NLT

  17. 1. I’ll only be right in my own eyes if I do what I think others expect me to do

  18. 1. I’ll only be right in my own eyes if I do what I think others expect me to do 2. I’ll only be right in God’s eyes if I do what I think God wants me to do

  19. 1. I’ll only be right in my own eyes if I do what I think others expect me to do 2. I’ll only be right in God’s eyes if I do what I think God wants me to do 3. I’ll only be right in the eyes of others if I do what they expect me to do.

  20. Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.” --Galatians 2.16 NLT

  21. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. --Philippians 2.4 ESV

  22. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. --Romans 8.1 ESV
