LAB 5: EARTHQUAKES, VOLCANOES & MOUNTAINS

Explore the relationship between earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountains, learning how they are related and where they occur. Discuss the occurrence of earthquakes and volcanoes along plate boundaries and the impact of gas content on volcanic eruptions.

  1. LAB 5: EARTHQUAKES, VOLCANOES & MOUNTAINS

  2. Key Question: How are earthquakes, volcanoes & mountains related?

  3. Think and Discuss: • Can ANY mountain have a volcano erupt from it? • Do earthquakes & volcanoes ALWAYS occur in the same area? • Do earthquakes & volcanoes ALWAYS occur at the same time?

  4. Vocabulary: 28. Latitude Imaginary lines that run east/west and measure north/south position 33. Longitude Imaginary lines that run north/south and measure east/west position 23. Depth Vertical measure downward from the earth’s surface

  5. 37. Magnitude Power, the amount of energy released 43. Mountains Any part of the earth higher than a hill (at least 1000 feet) 56. Volcanoes A vent in the earth’s surface where magma/lava and ash erupt

  6. In Lab 5, you will use latitude & longitude coordinates to plot earthquakes & volcanoes on a world map showing mountain chains.

  7. KEY: EARTHQUAKES = VOLCANOES = NAME DATE

  8. Lab 5: EARTHQUAKES, VOLCANOES & MOUNTAINS

  9. Key Question: How are Earthquakes, Volcanoes & Mountains related?

  10. EARTHQUAKES, VOLCANOES & MOUNTAINS-- ALL OCCUR ALONG PLATE BOUNDARIES

  11. EARTHQUAKES OCCUR WHERE ROCK MOVES ALONG A FAULT EX: SAN ANDREAS FAULT TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARY

  12. MOUNTAINS Are created at: CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARIES

  13. EX:HIMALAYAS, INDIA

  14. VOLCANOES OCCUR: at DIVERGENT Plate Boundaries (MID-OCEAN RIDGES) & CONVERGENTPlate Boundaries (SUBDUCTION ZONES)

  15. Mid Ocean Ridge Volcano DIVERGENT Plate Boundaries

  16. Subduction Zone Volcano CONVERGENT Plate Boundaries

  17. The GAS CONTENT of the magma will effect the type of volcanic eruption

  18. LOW GAS: CALM Eruption HIGH GAS: POWERFUL Eruption

  19. The exception…

  20. Occur:FAR FROM Plate Boundaries

  21. A “HOT SPOT” in the MANTLE burns through the CRUST & forms a VOLCANO(MID-PLATE) • The “HOT SPOT” does NOT move • The CRUST above the Hot Spot moves

  22. EX: The HAWAIIAN Islands
