  1. What You Should Know About Airbrushed Tanning If you’re thinking about airbrush tanning, you’ll need to make sure your skin is prepared for the process. Airbrush tanning is supposed to give you a similar result as tanning outside, but the risks are lower since you won’t be exposed to the sun’s UV rays. When you exfoliate your skin before a spray tan, be sure to use an exfoliating glove to evenly treat the skin. Rinse the exfoliator from your skin completely, and don’t use heavy oils or lotions to moisture the skin after you exfoliate. Your tan will stick best to the skin if it’s dry. It’s also a good idea to shave your legs the day before you get your airbrush tan. There should be at least 12 hours between the time you shave and the time you get your tan. This lowers the chances that your skin will be irritated when the airbrush tan is applied. Shaving is another way to lightly exfoliate the skin before tanning, and the DHA in spray tans reacts with the skin in a way that can cause burning and irritation if you don’t give your skin enough time to properly heal. When you make your appointment, make sure that you go to a facility that has good ventilation. This will immediately get rid of overspray in the area, so you won’t be exposed to chemicals for long periods of time. If you see lots of spray tan on the walls, this could be an indication that the spa is not cleaned regularly or properly ventilated. Ask the spa technician to use a low volume, low pressure machine for your spray tan so that you won’t inhale excessive fumes. Always ask for protective gear for your eyes and nose before your tanning session begins so you won’t get too much of the tanning substance in your nose or eyes. Remember that you still need to wear a sunscreen after getting an airbrush tan, since your skin can still burn if you spend too much time in the sun. Even though a spray tan doesn’t affect your body’s natural melanin, you’ll still need to make sure your skin is shielded from the sun after your visit to the tanning salon. You don’t have to get a “base tan” in the sun before going to the tanning salon, so don’t expose your skin to UV rays prior to getting an airbrush tan. The sunscreen can also help your spray tan to last longer.

  2. There are also a number of moisturizers you can use to keep your skin looking its best before and after your airbrush tan. Even though your skin should be dry right before you have the tan applied, use natural skin moisturizers like avocado oil and shea butter to add antioxidants to the skin a few days before your appointment. Shea butter also has a low SPF and can be added to your sunscreen before going outdoors to give your skin extra protection and even tone throughout the summer.
