  5. Before European explorers arrived in North America, many Native American groups had already adapted to living in their particular environment. • In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain to the Caribbean. His big goal was to find gold and land for his rulers.

  6. By the 1500s, European countries began colonizing America. Spain was the first to start colonizing, creating the colony of St. Augustine in present-day Florida. • The British and French also competed for land and the British eventually gained control of French lands and became the major power north of New Spain (Mexico).

  7. British colonies became big business and the need for laborers was high and Britain did not have a population high enough to send more workers. • African tribal leaders sold slaves to Britain and other European nations in exchange for products made in Europe. • Due to a high need in labor, slave populations continued to grow until the early 1800s when the slave trade was outlawed.

  8. The French colonies were vastly different than the British colonies. Due to being in a colder environment to the north, farming was much more difficult so other forms of trade and resources were needed. • This need for friendly trade forced the French colonists to have a much better relationship with Native Americans than the British colonists did.

  11. People have been living in present day Mexico for thousands of years. • Dating back to about 1000 B.C., the Olmec lived by the southern coast of the Gulf of Mexico. • Olmec culture greatly influenced a successful civilization, the Maya.

  12. After years of success, the Mayan civilization eventually declined, it is mostly a mystery as to why the Mayan society collapsed. • The next dominant group in present day Mexico was the Aztecs which rose around 1325 A.D. • The Aztec empire lasted until around 1500 when the Spanish arrived and changed the continent.

  13. The Spanish sent conquistadors, soldier-explorers, to conquer the Americas. • One particular conquistador, Hernan Cortes, used the advantage of information, weapons, and surprisingly, epidemic, or outbreak of disease, to defeat the Aztecs. • Spanish success and wealth from America led to other Europeans to send explorers to the Americas
