  1. INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY-METALASSOCIATED THEORY TOPICS TOPIC 2. MARKING & MEASURING GAUGES MARKING & MEASURING TOOLS MICROMETERS & VERNIER CALIPERS

  2. Marking & Measuring Tools Stainless Steel Rule Measuring, marking distances & setting calipers. Scriber Marking lines on metal for cutting, folding etc. Engineer’s Square Mark a small indent to prevent drill bit running off centre. Marking lines 900 to an edge or checking 900 angles. Centre Punch

  3. Marking Tools Spring Dividers Scribing circles, arcs, or radii on Metal. Jenny or Odd-leg calipers Marking lines parallel to an edge or a rebate.

  4. Marking Tools Inside Spring Calipers Measuring or checking inside diameters. Outside spring calipers Measuring or checking outside diameters.

  5. Marking & Measuring Tools Blacksmith square Clamping screw It is made in a single thickness. This enables it to lie flat on sheet metal for ease of marking out. The engineer’s bevel can be used to transfer angles from a protractor to the project.

  6. The Combination Set Square Head Protractor Centre Head Marking and checking angles of 450 and 900. It also contains a small level. Marking and checking any angle. Finding the centre of round stock.

  7. These are useful for determining the exact size of sheet metal or small round stock such as wire or thin tubing. Wire or Sheet gauges The screw pitch gauge is used to check the size and type of threads on external surfaces. A depth gauge is useful for checking the depth of holes, rebates or shoulders. This model also has a vernier scale. Feeler gauge This gauge can accurately test very small gaps between components. It is used commonly in the automotive trade.

  8. MICROMETERS & VERNIER CALIPERS Ratchet This must be used when closing the spindle onto the object being measured to ensure consistent pressure, and hence an accurate reading. Testing Accuracy Close the spindle against the anvil, (using the ratchet) and check the reading. A micrometer that has been “zeroed” will read zero when the spindle is completely closed.

  9. MICROMETERS & VERNIER CALIPERS Major Divisions= Minor Divisions= Thimble divisions= Total Reading= 4.00mm 0.50mm 0.17mm 4.67mm Major Divisions= Minor Divisions= Thimble divisions= Total Reading= 11.00mm 0.00 (none seen) 0.07mm 11.07mm

  10. MICROMETERS & VERNIER CALIPERS Main scale Vernier scale Fixed jaw Sliding jaw Vernier zero = Vernier division = Reading = 21.50mm 0.24mm 21.74mm (Press the space bar twice to see other types of vernier calipers)

  11. Vernier Calipers Dial readout Thumbwheel for adjustment. Digital readout. Both of these models have direct readout capability. No calculations are necessary.
