What is Panorama? • A rich online resource, offered by the Platform for Intercultural Europe (initiated in 2006 as the Civil Society Platform for Intercultural Dialogue) • The concept is based on the content of the Rainbow Paper “Intercultural Dialogue: From Practice to Policy and Back” • This paper is a result of a participative process in which many organisations came together to shape the voice of European civil society in the field of Intercultural Dialogue. • Ongoing endorsement: http://rainbowpaper.labforculture.org

Why Panorama? • Legacy and evaluation of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue (EYID) 2008 • Follow-up and long-term sustainability of EYID • Mapping resources, projects, organisations, events across Europe • Collective approach to understanding intercultural dialogue from practical, policy and research perspective

Principles of Panorama • Cross-sectoral engagement • Collective work • Open and free • Inclusive • Focused • Structured in line with the Rainbow Paper’s approach to intercultural dialogue • Connecting and bringing people together from all sectors of the Interculturalism debate, from arts and culture, to education, to social and youth policies, to human rights policies etc.

Research methods to collect resources • Internet search – general and specific search engines, online library catalogues, websites and online tools related to the topic • Desk offline search – review of printed materials • Inquiry and contacts with 70 experts, practitioners, researchers, project managers across Europe. • Personal observations and knowledge of the researchers involved

Types of resources • Documents and publications of the European Commission, Council of Europe, UNESCO • Documents, publications, projects of European cultural networks and associations • Publications (books, articles and viewpoints, research work and reports) of key authors, experts, researchers • Virtual libraries and online resource centers • Projects and practices, incl. websites presenting collection of practices • Organisations • Events of European networks, associations, government bodies

Scope and limitations • Concentrates on the European understanding and practice • Most of publications collected have an applied, or a policy-related aspect • Resources are related mainly to “pan-European” level, not national one. • Training programs and funding opportunities for Intercultural Dialogue might be in the next phase of the project • English language resources: the next phase will explore multilingual aspects

  11. Phases of development • 2008: First version online • 2009: Enriching the content and technical improvements • 2010: Continuation of technical development and improvement. Implementing monthly site statistics •  2011: Testing, resulting in further content enrichment and technical development. Appointment of an editorial team.

Results of the testing/survey: General comments • “An excellent tool which has a wide selection of material concerning intercultural dialogue and related issues, organizations, surveys, articles, projects and bibliography. “ • “Panorama, as the word panorama explains, is an overview, a comprehensive collection of varied data which share, and are rooted in a common set of values, aims, understandings, perspectives and practices.” • “An electronic small library, a contact point, a collection of references.” • “Artistic and user-friendly” • “Aesthetically very nice” • “I found the menu structure clear and easy to use”

Results of the testing/survey: more concrete comments • “Intercultural Competence as a meaning became more clear for me after reading some of the material.” • “Definitions - very useful since it includes not only definitions, but also interpretations, which build on the very content of the concept of ICD. “ • “Gives a clear view of the organisations.” • Navigation was easy and pleasant. It is possible to orientate fast if needed, but also an enjoyable longer journey into the context is much appreciated.” • “Panorama is well structured but the design is a bit static.”

How would you compare Panorama to other online resources in the same/similar subject domain • Panorama is unique: no other similar sources • EYID official website is similar, but Panorama is definitely far better, includes more diversified and complete resources. • Panorama is clearer and simpler • Excellent initiative with a wealth of information/data: needs a little more user friendliness to make a difference

Users maintaining the calendar? • Organizations: to consider it in relation to partnership search • Projects: more analytical, interactive and user-friendly approach in presentation • Focusing on more topics related to intercultural dialogue
