Polar Metadata Profile and Recommended VocabulariesSAON Task 2 Presented by John Huck, University of Alberta Libraries Potsdam, Germany, October 1-2, 2012
Task Update • Comparison of ISO profiles completed (January 2012) • Survey of vocabularies begun (2011) • New task leader appointed (May 2012) • Task team reconvened (September 2012)
Profile Considerations • Technical interoperability will be straightforward • ISO profiles are meant to be interoperable • May be less important for higher level aggregation • e.g., brokering approach (Nativi, et al., 2011) • Data centres are already working on interoperability • A polar profile could address other functions and support semantic interoperability • Web services • Data citation standards (e.g., CODATA) • Content standards (e.g., Researcher IDs)
Vocabulary Considerations • Vocabularies play a key role in effective discovery • Challenges • Require commitment for ongoing maintenance • Domain scope and granularity • Mono or multi-lingual • Alternatives • Authorizing or contributing to existing vocabularies • Developing an evaluation framework to assess or create vocabularies
Coordination Across Networks & Platforms • Help identify and prioritize functional requirements for metadata beyond discovery • Help develop links between networks and data centres • Help tasks locate resources to complete their work
Access to Data • Continue to advocate for open data policies • Encourage deposit of data in data centres • Promote innovations that emerge from other areas of data management, eScience, and semantic web
