  3. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to BUNGEE JUMP???? If you’re anything like me, the thought may have crossed your mind…. But the fear would prevent you from going through with it!

  4. Have NO Fear!!!!! • Today you will get to experience a bungee jump from ____ inches. • Don’t worry, it won’t be you taking the big plunge, it will be your Bratz doll! • During the next thrilling 90 minutes you will collect data, create a scatter plot of your data, create a trend line, and use your equation to predict a jump from _____ inches! • Are you ready to get started? • If so, say Geronimo!

  5. It all started…. • The first time I saw Barbie Bungee was at the Texas Instruments International Conference in 2003 presented by Judy Hicks • In 2005 NCTM included Bungee Barbies in their “Illuminations” book • To keep up with current times I have adapted the activity from Barbies to Bratz. • Next year I guess I can make Hannah Montana dolls bungee jump!!!!

  6. The Procedure • attach a rubber band to the doll’s feet • make a bungee cord by attaching more rubber bands to the first one • hold the end of the bungee cord and let the doll drop • measure the distance she falls and repeat 2 more times • record the average of the 3 jumps • continue to add rubber bands and measure the distance until you have at least 5 sets of data

  7. The Technology - EXCEL • Enter the data collected from the drops • Create a scatter plot of the points • Add a trend line and display equation on chart • Use your equation to predict the number of rubber bands need to perform a drop from _____ inches.

  8. Variations of the Activity • Elementary Level - estimation • Sixth Grade - patterns • Algebra I – basic linear equations • Algebra II – comparing methods finding of best fit lines and trend lines

  9. Sample work…

  10. Are you ready? Let’s recap! • Collect data • Open Excel file and enter data • Create scatter plot and trend line • Use your equation to predict the number of bands for the final drop • Get your Bratz ready for the final jump! • Any questions?

  11. Thank you for coming!!!! • If you would like extra copies of the documents the can be found on my website athttp://sherwood.ebrschools.org/susanspath/
